a.k.a The Landing Lights
Our front walk has become our signature garden over the years. Every year on Mother's Day we plant hundreds of little marigold plants along both sides of the walk, six inches apart. At first, with only one yellow blossom per plant, the whole array looks more like landing lights at an airport than flowers in a garden, but as they grow and puff out, they fill in the gaps and start looking pretty nice. We even made the front page of the local newspaper one year because of our thick border of yellow.
This year was rough on the marigolds, though. A few weeks after planting, we actually had a frost for two or three nights in a row, which stunted and killed a whole section of one side. Luckily, we had overbought the little marigold sets, so we were able to pull up the damaged ones and replace them. A little Miracle-Gro™, and they look good as new!

| Some of the hardy clumps of Johnny-Jump-Ups we have all over the yard have also nestled in among the marigolds... |
